Quoted: In Al Gore's brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

When two research teams last year created embryonic-like stem cells that could be ethical alternatives to embryonic stem cell research, pro-life advocates were hopeful about their potential. Now, scientists at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research have used the reprogrammed cells to successfully treat Parkinson's in mice.

Quoted: The brain cells responsible for triggering Parkinson's disease have been identified by scientists who believe the discovery could lead to new ways to treat the condition.

The "mother cells" which have been identified produce and use the chemical dopamine to transmit messages in the brain.

April 9 2008 Results of a new study back up the results from previous studies that show that stem cells taken from a person's skin have the ability to treat Parkinson's disease.
In the latest study to be released in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cambridge scientists prove that it is indeed possible to reprogram normal skin cells to reduce the symptoms associated with Parkinsons's disease in rats.

My Faves for Monday, April 07, 2008

SUNDAY, April 6 (HealthDay News) -- Current therapies using stem cell transplants in the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease may not work long-term, because the disease is an ongoing process that continually causes damage, new findings suggest.

[tags: pd]

Quoted: New studies in the journal Nature Medicine show that brain cell transplants may be somewhat beneficial, but the results may not be long-term. The studies may have increased optimism, but they seem to have also raised questions.

Quoted: "Mother cells" which produce the neurons affected by Parkinson's disease have been identified by scientists, according to new research published in the journal Glia. The new discovery could pave the way for future treatments for the disease, including the possibility of growing new neurons, and the cells which support them, in the lab. Scientists hope these could then be transplanted into patients to counteract the damage caused by Parkinson's.

CRISIS breeds opportunity, as the bottom-fishers starting to circle beaten-up mortgage bonds and leveraged loans can attest. For George Soros it offers a chance of a different sort: to revive his favourite intellectual theory. In his latest book, “The New Paradigm for Financial Markets”, published on April 3rd, he sets out to illuminate the credit crunch through the prism of “reflexivity.”
