Quoted: With the Democratic nomination now in its endgame, it's time to speculate on that question that makes politicos weak at the knees: who will be tapped to be vice president? Unlike the top job, there is no election here, it's the first big choice that we get to see the candidate make about his cabinet.

Most Europeans see the U.S. presidential election as a done deal. They are quite surprised. They were convinced that Sen. Hillary Clinton was the sure thing. Now, and they are confused, they are expecting the inevitable: Sen. John McCain as president.

And they do not blame Sen. Barack Obama; they blame Clinton. They are shocked that a Republican candidate should win at all. They are truly gobsmacked.

My Faves for Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Quoted: A study recently conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) showed for the first time that artificially created stem cells can be used to treat Parkinson’s disease. In another research project conducted at the Imperial College in London, scientists identified the source of nerve cells in the embryo. The findings of these research projects have led scientists to believe stem cells can be used in new therapies for Parkinson’s disease.

Quoted: Light emitting diodes, or LEDs, are widely used today in a variety of devices – they are often integrated in remote controls and toys, and are commonly used for street and traffic lighting. However, so far, LEDs have not become popular in the mainstream consumer market, probably because LED light sources emit strange ‘disturbing’ colors, and because they are significantly more expensive than traditional incandescent light bulbs. LSG says its new LED product line solves both of these issues, delivering a combination of high energy efficiency and light quality in a "cost effective" way.

UBS, the largest Swiss bank, said Tuesday that it expected to cut about 5,500 jobs, including 2,600 in its investment banking unit, as it announced a first-quarter loss of about $10.9 billion.

The bank also said it was planning to sell $15 billion dollars of distressed mortgage assets to the asset management company BlackRock and that they would close down the bank's institutional municipal bond business in the United States.

UBS, which has been the hardest hit of all European financial institutions in the credit crisis that began last year, reported a first-quarter loss of 11.5 billion Swiss francs. That was in line with its previous estimates, but it represented a sharp turn from a net profit of 3.0 billion francs in the first quarter 2007.

A solar power satellite, or SPS or Powersat, as originally proposed would be a satellite built in high Earth orbit that uses microwave power transmission to beam solar power to a very large antenna on Earth. Advantages of placing the solar collectors in space include the unobstructed view of the Sun, unaffected by the day/night cycle, weather, or seasons[1]. It is a renewable energy source, zero emission, and only generates waste as a product of manufacture and maintenance.

[tags: solar, satellites]

Solar satellites are high voltage solar panels that could handle sunlight during 99% of a 24 hour day. They have wireless transmitters that can beam large amounts of microwave energy and have an inflateable radiator to absorb heat in space. Solar satallites are still being developed and will provide a great source of energy for the earth when it becomes available.
