Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10

Say the words "speechrecognition software" and most people will think of DragonNaturallySpeaking. Dragon has ruled the roost for years, partly becauseit's a perennially great piece of software, and partly from lack ofcompetition. Now, Vista and the Mac OS have advanced voice recognitionthat's pretty good at controlling your computer's menus and windows. When it comes to dictation on the Mac, you'll need to spring forMacSpeech Dictate (which licenses the technology behind DragonNaturallySpeaking).

The Absinthe Ritual

The Absinthe Ritual

All true absinthes are bitter to some degree (due to the presence of absinthin, extracted from the wormwood) and are therefore
usuallyserved with the addition of sugar. This not only counters thebitterness, but in well made absinthes seems also to subtly
improve the herbal flavour-profile of the drink.

The classic French absinthe ritual involves placing a sugar cube on a flat perforated spoon, which rests on the rim of the glass
containing a measure or "dose" of absinthe. Iced water is then very slowly dripped on to the sugar cube, which gradually dissolves
and drips, along with the water, into the absinthe, causing the green liquor to louche ("loosh") into an opaque opalescent white as the
essential oils precipitate out of the alcoholic solution. Usually three to four parts water are added to one part of 68% absinthe.
Historically, true absintheurs used to take great care in adding the water, lettingit fall drop by single drop onto the sugar cube, and
then watching each individual drip cut a milky swathe through the peridot-green absinthe below. Seeing the drink gradually change
colour was part of its ritualistic attraction.

Nissan unveils prototype electric car

Nissan has unveiled a new prototype electric vehicle with more powerful batteries.
Nissan aims to release its electric car between 2010-12.

Nissan Motor Co has unveiled a new prototype electric vehicle with batteriestwice as powerful as conventional technology, aiming to take a lead inzero-emission cars.

Japan's third-largest automaker said thefront-wheel drive, boxy-shaped car has a newly developed 80 kilowattmotor with advanced lithium-ion batteries installed under the vehicle'sfloor to avoid taking up space.

The laminated batteries, jointlydeveloped with electronics giant NEC Corp, pack twice the electricpower of conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries currently used inhybrid and electric cars, it said.

Nissan aims to start sellingan electric car in the United States and Japan in 2010 and the rest ofthe world in 2012. It will have a new "unique body style" that is notbased on any existing model, the company said.

Nissan has beenslower than rivals Toyota and Honda to embrace petrol-electric hybrids, but it aims to become the industry leader in electric vehicles.

Such cars have so far failed to break into the mainstream, partly because of their limited battery life.

Nissanis also developing hydrogen fuel-cell cars as well as its own hybridsystem, betting that zero-emission vehicles will take a 15 per centshare of the global auto market in the future.

The company alsounveiled a prototype hybrid that will also be launched in the US andJapan in 2010, as well as a new, slimmer fuel cell stack with doublethe power density of previous ones and 35 per cent lower costs.

Within 10 years, homeowners could power their homes in daylight with solar photovoltaic cells, while using excess solar energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water to power a household fuel cell. If the new process developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finds acceptance in the marketplace, electricity-by-wire from a central source could be a thing of the past.

Newspaper publishers are facing a perfect storm thanks to three megatrends: rising inflation, America's growing green conscience and disruptive technology. To succeed in this era of great change, they need to think about how to make lemonade out of these perceived lemons. Unfortunately, so far, they haven't. Here's my advice.

Quoted: Aeroecology is the emerging discipline for studying how airborne organisms -- birds, bats, arthropods and microbes -- depend on the support of the lower atmosphere that is closest to the Earth's surface. Called the aerosphere, it influences the daily and seasonal movements, development traits, such as size and shape, and evolution of behavioral, sensory, metabolic and respiratory functions of airborne organisms. Understanding how they respond to altered landscapes and atmospheric conditions can also help mitigate adverse effects.

Quoted: Eight years ago today , George W. Bush uttered the now broken promise that has come to define his failed presidency. Accepting his party's nomination, Governor Bush promised to restore "honor and dignity" to the White House. But as events continue to show, a more accurate - and ironic - mantra for the lawless Bush White House would be "no controlling legal authority." At the time it was delivered, Bush's acceptance speech at the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia was an arrogant, deceitful broadside against the Clinton/Gore years.

Quoted: Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system, dies at the age of 89 near Moscow.

SpaceX launch fails a third time

Falcon 1 on launch pad in March 2006 (Copyright SpaceX)
The first launch in March 2006 ended with a fuel line leak and a fire

A private rocket carrying three satellites, including a Nasa space sail, has failed to reach orbit.

It is the third unsuccessful launch attempt for the Falcon 1 rocket, built by private space firm SpaceX.

The vehicle's two stages failed to separate two minutes and 20 seconds into launch from Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

SpaceX's engineers are still investigating the cause of the rocket's failure.

"It was obviously a big disappointment not to reach orbit on thisFlight 3 of the Falcon 1," said Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX,in a short statement read to reporters.

"The most important message I'd like to send right now is thatSpaceX will not skip a beat in execution going forward. We have flightfour of Falcon 1 almost ready for flight and flight five right behindthat." .......
