With the break-up of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I, the League of Nations created the French Mandate Syria and British Mandate Palestine. Approximately 80% of the British Mandate of Palestine was east of the Jordan river and was known as "Transjordan". In 1921, the British gave semi-autonomous control of Transjordan to the future Abdullah I of Jordan, from the Hashemite family, who had lost their civil war with the House of Saud for control of Mecca and Medina.

World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz, gravely damaged by a pay scandal, was clinging to his job heading into an annual meeting of the 185-member development lender Sunday.

Will he go? Should he? The bank’s staff association has already called on him to fall on his sword. On Thursday April 12th, the vast atrium of the bank’s headquarters was filled with staffers, who heard Alison Cave, chair of their association, say that Mr Wolfowitz had “compromised the integrity and effectiveness” of the World Bank and “destroyed the staff’s trust in his leadership”. Mr Wolfowitz, returning to the building after a grilling by the press, found his own people more querulous still. Some shouted at him to resign.

MAY 12, 2017 - BUSINESSWIRE. Mountain View-based search giant Google Inc today announced they’ve acquired the internet for the astounding sum of $2,455.5 billion in cash. The deal had been rumored in various search blogs since the beginning of the year and was now confirmed by the company’s CEO. “This is in line with our vision to make information more accessible to end users,” says Eric Schmidt. “With the acquisition, we can increase the speed of indexing as everything will already be on our servers by the time it’s published.”
